150 years of clean technology

Malmberg’s long history started on 7 April 1866 in the village of Yngsjö, on the southeast coast of Sweden, when the master blacksmith Jöns Mattisson-Malmberg founded the company. Since his interest was focused principally on water, he spent much of his time developing new drilling techniques. Malmberg’s first wells were drilled as far back as the 1880s and, ever since then, our core operations have revolved around water.

Pioneers of water treatment, drilling, shallow geothermal energy and biogas

Malmberg's story begins when 23-year-old Smith Jöns Malmberg 1866 buy a forge in Yngsjö and registers a company under its own name. Jöns is on an ingenious solution to filter wells and keep pollution away, while he develops an equally ingenious method to quickly and easily dig down to the fresh groundwater in clean gravel.

After a few years, forge got water technology as a new line of business and its the way it should remain even when future generations take over and develop the family business.

As the modern welfare state during the 1900s expanded in Sweden, there is an increasing need for supply of running fresh water to more households.  In the 30's and 40's the first wastewater treatment plants are built and then the post-war record years follow with ever-increasing demand for greater well drilling projects and water utilities to municipalities and companies.

At the same time the company developes in line with the times. Malmberg's experience in waste water treatment provides expertise in the recovery of biogas as a renewable energy source. Well drilling leads to the construction of Sweden's first ground water heating system, which in turn result in a focus on geothermal energy.

150 years after Jöns Malmberg with his own hands created the innovative filter well is the family name synonymous with innovation, environment, energy and creativity - all with water as the common denominator.

Founder

Jöns Malmberg 1866

It was in April 1866 that the young black-smith Jöns Mattisson-Malmberg founded the company with very modest beginnings. From dawn until long after dark, axes, horseshoes, builders’ metalwork and harrows were forged in the smithy.

New Deep-drill

Malmberg New Deep-drill 1976

In 1976 Malmberg was testing a new deep-drill on the company premises, when a groundwater aquifer under  natural pressure was discovered, an artesian spring. The 4.5-meter water fountain that gushed out of the spring opened up new business opportunities – storage of heat and cold in groundwater aquifers.

Building Sweden's treatment plants

Many new waste water treatment plants were built in Sweden during the sixties and seventies. Malmberg was a major player in the development of this infrastructure.

Malmberg in China

Malmberg was the first Swedish company in 1992 that comissioned treatment plants to China. Gao Bei Dian was one of Beijing's largest plants for example, For the Guangshou region in south of China many drinking water plants were built with Malmberg equipment.
