Biogas technology with high purification and low energy usage

We have developed biogas technology that processes the gas by water scrubbing. This involves carbon dioxide and hydrogen sulphide being dissolved in water and separated from the biogas. Our technology is proven and provides a very high methane content.

High pressure and low temperature for effective absorption

The incoming biogas is compressed in two steps to absorption pressure. First it is cooled and led to the bottom of the absorption column. The high pressure and the low temperature make the reaction more effective. The absorption column is filled with plastic rings that provide a larger reaction area. Water trickles from the top along the column, meets the gas and absorbs carbon dioxide and hydrogen sulphide. Methane rises to the top of the column, ready to be dried and further processed for either gas injection or vehicle fuel. In the next two columns, methane slippage is reduced and all gaseous components are released from the process water.

Water and heat recovery for best economy

The water is recirculated and reused for the absorption process. Malmberg’s technology offers a maximum of heat recovery and requires a minimum of maintenance. It is optimised to secure the best possible gas purification with the lowest possible energy consumption – a true economical and environmentally sound advantage. The process plant is prefabricated in a container solution, Malmberg COMPACT™.

Table - cost comparison of separatoin of CO2 in different suppliers' biogas upgrading plants

Malmberg achieved the best results in an independent cost comparison performed by the Fraunhofer Institute in cooperation with Base Technologies GmbH. The study compares the cost of separation of CO2 in different suppliers’ biogas upgrading plants.
