In Hyllie, Malmö, a new sustainable neighborhood is emerging, where ecological and social sustainability prevail, and circularity and the sharing economy become the norm. As part of the innovative urban development project Embassy of Sharing, we at Malmberg have developed a comprehensive solution for energy recovery, storage, and shared energy use between buildings.

Our energy solution is based on a combination of heat recovery, thermal energy storage in bedrock, and a smart sharing system between buildings. Each property has an optimized energy supply while surplus energy can be shared with others in the area. By creating a flexible and resource-efficient energy solution, energy waste is minimized, ensuring that every kilowatt is put to use.

Geothermal energy is a well-established and reliable technology that we have been working with for over 40 years. In this project, geothermal energy is combined with an innovative solution for sharing energy between buildings at the neighborhood level—making this project truly unique.

Geothermal energy harnesses the sun’s heat stored in the ground. By drilling deep boreholes, we can extract energy from the bedrock and use it for heating and cooling buildings. By utilizing solar heat from the ground, we can generate up to five times more energy than what is needed to operate the system. This makes geothermal energy both an efficient and renewable energy source.

In 2022, we carried out energy drilling for six energy wells, each reaching a depth of 300 meters to maximize energy exchange. We then installed pipelines from the wells to a central distribution well, enabling efficient energy sharing between the buildings.
