Our first biogas upgrading plant is located in Kristianstad, just half an hour from our headquarters in Yngsjö. This plant was the starting point of a long and exciting journey, and today, we upgrade raw gas for more than 120 customers across Europe. A lot has happened since then, but it all started here.
Reliable delivery – year after year
The plant in Kristianstad produces approximately 10 GWh of upgraded gas each year—enough to power up to seven biogas buses annually. The fact that it’s still running just as reliably after more than two decades in operation is a testament to robust technology and high quality. In fact, the plant has been running smoothly since day one, with minimal maintenance and delivering green benefits every day.
From sludge to biomethane
The upgrading plant is conveniently located next to Kristianstad’s wastewater treatment facility (CRV), where the municipality’s wastewater is purified daily. Residual sludge from the treatment process is digested in large anaerobic digesters, producing raw biogas. This gas is then transferred to our upgrading plant, where it’s purified to about 98% sustainable biomethane. From here, the gas is distributed directly to fueling stations, where city buses, municipal vehicles, trucks, and private cars can refuel with clean, green biogas.
Upgrading pioneers
Our Kristianstad plant was the first biogas upgrading facility in the municipality, paving the way for further expansion in the region. By 2004, the next Malmberg facility opened at Allöverket, and production has steadily grown ever since. Today, biogas is primarily produced at the Karpalund facility, which annually converts around 85,000 tons of organic material into green energy. Raw materials include manure, industrial organic waste from local food companies, and pre-treated household waste.
More than two decades later, our first upgrading plant still delivers sustainable biogas in Kristianstad. This longevity is proof of the long-term value of both our technology and biogas itself – a circular energy solution contributing to cleaner transport and efficient resource use. Over the years, we’ve upgraded the plant, optimized its performance, and implemented new technology to ensure maximum reliability and efficiency. Our journey towards a greener future continues, as we develop new solutions for tomorrow’s biogas production.
